A Returning Breakers Fan

In 2018, Corey Webster was at the free-throw line with a Barstool logo on his jersey. Barstool - at the time, was known for reposting drunk college student videos, and fending off sexual harassment and cyberbullying allegations. Thankfully, that’s all over, and I can proudly support the Breakers again.

There have been numerous references by the new ownership to the golden era between 2010 and 2013. But how can today’s generation be successful? A combination of Kiwi talent, toughness, community presence, and consistency of roster.

The Breakers’ leadership in NBL26 breathes New Zealand. They’ve hired great Kiwi assistant coaches, and Dillon has spoken about the quest for a majority Kiwi team. I’m stoked to see Tukaha Cooper and Liam Judd included as Development Players. Positions previously held by successful NBL players like Shea IIi and Finn Delany. Tukaha and Liam have the potential to be solid rotation players.

Much of the hype is around PJC returning for another MVP-level season, but my money's on Mennenga. He had a sniff of the NBA at Summer League, he’s great back to basket, and on the perimeter attack. And quickly becoming a knockdown shooter from 23 feet. I’m not sure if anyone else notices this, but he’s a dog. In a good way. A lot of the time, he seems pissed off - which, when transmuted correctly, results in elevated levels of play.

A big reason I tuned out the Breakers was their marketing. Could their social media team (and the NBL) post authentic basketball content in NBL26? Highlights and discussion of the games without a “he’s looking bouncy” caption. Leave the politics and drama to the American basketball league. If a player comes out as a trump supporter, gay, or a smoker, I’m happy they’re living their life. I just don’t want to hear about it during the game.

I’d love to see Reuben Te Rangi and Rob Loe speaking on their early days growing up in Auckland, watching the Breakers, and transitioning to playing for them. There are thousands of kids in Auckland who would gain a lot more from that story as opposed to a “Who would you not want to date your daughter?” player video.

Basketball is a game of momentum, and the Breakers are starting with more anticipative fuel than they’ve had in a long time. I’m behind the boys. “You can do it all season long!”
